Ex-Jets quarterback Sanchez was arrested for his alleged part in the stabbing
The NFL commentator was released from the hospital earlier today, TMZ reports.
He was charged with battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle, and public intoxication.
The 38-year-old was allegedly slurring his words and behaving erratically moments before the stabbing took place, per police records.
The other person involved in the incident was treated for lacerations, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.
He is a 69-year-old male who suffered “significant injuries”, Fox News affiliate WXIN reported, citing police sources.
The sources further claimed that Sanchez was behaving “erratically” before the stabbing by doing wind sprints in the alley before confronting the driver.
The man told officers he was acting in self-defence when Sanchez was stabbed in the chest near the Loughmiller’s Pub & Eatery in the early hours of the morning.
The pair got into an argument over the man’s decision to park his truck at a loading dock to collect used cooking oil, a probable cause affidavit seen by the Indy Star claims.
Per court documents, the man was left with a slash to his left cheek and has since been released from the hospital.
When detectives spoke with Sanchez in the hospital, he said he could only remember “grabbing for a window” and did not know who attacked him or where it happened, the docs state.
Video taken from a nearby hotel allegedly shows Sanchez approaching the truck driver’s door which he opened, and started a conversation with the man, police said in the affidavit.
The driver told officers he struggled to understand what the athlete was saying as he didn’t have his hearing aids in and claimed the ESPN and Fox Sports analyst was slurring his words.
Another part of the video allegedly shows them have an interaction next to the truck before the man starts backing away from Sanchez.
“Sanchez is then seen running (after the man) and the video shows Mr. Sanchez grabbing and throwing (the man) towards the wall of the Westin (hotel),” police wrote in the document.
The brawl then continued and this is when the man told police he pulled out pepper spray which Sanchez allegedly wiped off his face.
When the spray had no effect, the man, who told police he thought “this guy is trying to kill me,” pulled a knife and allegedly struck the athlete in the torso multiple times.
Sanchez looked at him “with a look of shock” and fled the alley, the 69-year-old told officers.
He was later found wounded inside a nearby bar before being rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
